Roberto Mancini, ternyata pernah bertanding dengan Tim Nasional (Timnas) Indonesia saat masih aktif sebagai pemain profesional. Kala itu, Mancini kalah kalah dari Timnas Indonesia dalam pertandingan persahabatann di Medan, Sumatera Utara.
Pengalaman Mancini bermain melawan Timnas Indonesia terjadi pada 1996. Saat itu, Mancini bermain sebagai kapten Sampdoria.

Dia dan rekan-rekan menghadapi Timnas Indonesia di Stadion Teladan, Medan, 6 Juni 1996. Mancini masih berusia 32 tahun kala itu.
Dia bersalaman dengan kapten Timnas Indonesia Fakhri Husaini saat itu, Fakhri Husaini, jelang pertandingan dimulai. Momen itu diunggah Coach Fakhri pada 2018 di Instagram.

“22 tahun lalu di Stadion Teladan Medan, tepatnya 6 Juni 1996 bersama Roberto Mancini kapten tim Sampdoria (sekarang menjadi pelatih Timnas Italia),” tulis Coach Fakhri.
Secara mengejutkan, Sampdoria asuhan Sven Goran Eriksson kewalahan menghadapi permainan Timnas Indonesia. Tim Garuda bahkan menang dengan skor tipis 2-1.
