Selain performa apiknya tersebut, Dia tak segan memotivasi rekan-rekan setimnya untuk tampil lebih baik lagi. Fernandes kerap kali menunjukkan kepemimpinan di lapangan, hingga disanding-sandingkan dengan eks kapten MU, Eric Cantona.

Meski demikian, untuk menjadi kapten tim Fernandes masih belum mendapat kepercayaan dari Ole Gunnar Solskjaer . Saat ini masih diemban oleh bek MU posisi tersebut Harry Maguire.

Legenda MU, Paul Scholes, menanggapi soal Fernandes hal itu lantaran area bermain Fernandes yang lebih banyak bermain di depan yang belum bisa mendapat jabatan sebagai kapten tim. Menurutnya.

Dalam pandangan Scholes, kapten tim saat ini oleh pemain-pemain bertahan memang lebih banyak diemban. Namun, Fernandes karena perannya sebagai pemimpin tanpa ban kapten di lengan diakuinya tetap penting di MU.
